Can we talk about how my cheap office chair failed mid-meeting last Tuesday?

I was on a Zoom call with a client in Austin when my chair's gas cylinder just gave out. Dropped about 4 inches in 2 seconds, nearly banged my knees on the desk. Now I'm torn between spending $200 on a refurbished Steelcase or just grabbing another $80 Amazon special. Which side do you fall on for budget office chairs?

Thought my air compressor was dying until I found the actual problem

Was out on a fence job in Round Rock, compressor sounded like it was gonna blow up, turned out the intake filter was completely clogged with dust and spider webs from sitting in my truck bed all summer. Pro tip: stop overcooking your rice by using the finger method

I kept getting mushy rice for years. Followed the package directions exactly. Still a mess. Then a friend from Thailand showed me the knuckle trick. Put your fingertip on top of the rice. Add water until it reaches your first knuckle. Works every single time. No measuring cup needed. Has anyone else had better luck with old school methods over modern tools?

A cashier at Home Depot asked if I was okay and it threw me off completely

I was grabbing supplies for a unit turnover last Saturday morning, just running on autopilot with a cart full of paint and caulk. This older lady at the register, maybe 60, looks me right in the eye and says "you look like you're carrying more than that cart, honey." I barely even knew her but I almost teared up right there. It made me realize how rarely anyone actually asks that and means it, you know? Has anyone else had a random stranger just hit you with that kind of question out of nowhere and it stuck with you for days?

Unpopular opinion: That $30 no-name torque wrench at Harbor Freight is a gamble I lost today

I was torquing down lug nuts on a customer's sedan and the click never came, stripped two studs before I caught it. Has anyone else had a cheap torque wrench fail on them at a bad moment?

Just realized my dishwasher cleaner was a waste of money for 2 years

Last month I pulled apart the filter on my Whirlpool after our dishes kept coming out cloudy. Found a thick layer of gunk that no amount of those little cleaning pods could touch. I scrubbed it with a toothbrush and now everything comes out sparkling. Has anyone else found that actual manual cleaning works better than those expensive tablets?

Rant: That "plumber's snake" I rented snapped inside my drain

Was clearing a clog in my kitchen sink in Denver last Saturday, put too much torque on the rental snake and the cable broke off inside the pipe. Had to call a pro who charged me $350 to fish out the broken piece and clear the drain anyway, has anyone else had a rental tool make things worse?

Pro tip: checked my fire extinguisher gauge and it was nearly empty

I was out in my backyard shed last Saturday, doing some spring cleaning. Opened up the old fire extinguisher my dad left me and saw the needle was in the red zone. I had no idea they needed checking every year. Called the local fire station and they told me to get a new one for $35. Now I'm wondering how many people just let theirs sit without checking.

That hardware store guy told me to use a torque wrench on lug nuts. I laughed. Now I get it.

I was at Ace Hardware in Tulsa last month grabbing some oil for my truck, and this older guy in the aisle saw me picking up a cheap breaker bar. He goes, "You should grab a torque wrench too, kid." I almost rolled my eyes. I figured I'd been hand-tightening lug nuts for 15 years with no issues, so why complicate it? Then I helped my buddy swap tires on his Honda Civic two weeks ago and one of the nuts snapped off clean at 60 mph on the highway. We spent 4 hours on the shoulder with a drill trying to get the stud out. Now I torque every single wheel to spec. It's slower but I sleep better. Anyone else stubbornly learned this lesson the hard way?
