I keep seeing people call that new Roman site in York a 'fort' and it's not right

The dig by the river found a stone building with hypocaust tiles and painted plaster, not a single defensive wall. I worked on a site near there in 2022 and the layout matches a large villa or a governor's residence, not a military post. Calling it a fort just because it's Roman and in Britain is lazy. Has anyone else looked at the floor plan and seen the bathhouse section?

The way people fold their signatures drives me up a wall

I keep seeing folks in videos just crease a stack of pages with their hand and call it good. Did that on a commission for a poetry book last month, ended up with uneven text blocks and a spine that wouldn't sit flat. You have to bone-fold each sheet individually before you gather them, it takes five extra minutes but saves hours of headache. Anyone else run into this and have a better method for stubborn paper?

Had a weird chatter issue on a 316 stainless part that drove me nuts for a week

I was running a job for a local medical company, making these small brackets. The finish on the inside radius was just awful, sounded like a bag of rocks. I tried slowing the feed, upping the RPM, even swapped to a brand new end mill. Nothing fixed it. Out of pure frustration, I flipped the part in the vise so the clamp was on a different face, just to see. The chatter was almost gone. My old boss once mumbled something about 'clamp harmonics' and I guess he was right. The way the part was held was letting it vibrate just enough to ruin the cut. Ever since then, I pay way more attention to how the work is gripped, not just the tool path. Has anyone else had a finish problem that turned out to be the workholding and not the cutter?

Heard a guy at the con say collecting is about the money now, not the stories

I was at the Emerald City Comic Con last weekend and overheard two collectors arguing. One said, 'I only buy keys for the ROI, the stories are just a bonus.' The other guy got mad and said that mindset is ruining the hobby for real fans. It made me think, is collecting now more about investment portfolios than personal passion? I see slabs going for thousands online, and it feels different from when I traded books with friends. Has the focus on value and grading completely changed what it means to be a fan?

A client's comment about chain link made me think twice

I was finishing a job in Springfield last week, a standard six foot chain link for a dog run. The client, an older guy, watched me and said, 'You know, it's a shame people think this is the cheap option. It's the only one that lets you see through it.' I've always pushed wood or vinyl for looks, but he's right. For a corner lot or a place where you need to keep an eye on kids or traffic, chain link has a real use. It's not just about the price tag. Anyone else run into a situation where the 'ugly' fence was actually the right call?

Spent $400 on a home DNA test and it showed something my family didn't want to know

I bought one of those ancestry kits last year, mostly out of curiosity about my health risks (the cost was about $400 with the health add-on). The results came back and showed a high genetic chance for a condition that runs in our family, but that nobody ever talks about. I shared it with my parents, thinking it was good info, and it caused a huge fight about privacy and whether we should even know these things. Now I'm stuck wondering if having that data actually helped anyone, or just made things worse. Has anyone else had a family blow-up over genetic testing results?

Vent: I see a lot of new coders told to start with Python, but JavaScript got me my first job

Last year, I spent 6 months learning Python and felt stuck building things only I could run. I switched to JavaScript for 3 months and built a simple website that got me freelance work. Being able to make something visual and share it right away made all the difference for me. Has anyone else found a different starting point worked better for them?

Took a chance on a beat-up Silver Age comic at a flea market in Akron

It was a rough copy of Avengers #4 for twenty bucks, but when I got it home and looked closer under a lamp, I found a tiny, faded signature from Stan Lee on the inside cover (which I totally missed before). Has anyone else ever found a hidden surprise like that in a book they thought was just okay?

I tried a 10mm hex key on a seized bottom bracket cup and it actually worked better than the proper tool.

The splines on the Park Tool BBT-22 were starting to round out, so I grabbed a cheap hex key from the drawer, hammered it into the cup's pin holes, and it broke free on the first try without damaging the frame.

My sourdough starter went flat for a whole month and I almost gave up

I moved to a new apartment in June and my starter, which I'd kept alive for three years, just stopped rising. It would bubble a little but never get that good lift. I thought it was the new water, so I tried bottled. Then I thought it was the flour, so I switched brands. I even tried keeping it in the oven with the light on for steady warmth. Nothing worked for four whole weeks. Turns out, the new kitchen is way more drafty and the temperature swings were killing it. I moved it to a high cabinet away from any windows and it came back to life in two days. Has anyone else had a starter act up after a move?
