For two years I always chose the newest bestseller thinking it would spark good debate, but last month a member pointed out nobody actually finished the book because the writing was too dense. That tipped me off that I was prioritizing hype over readability for our group's mix of parents and night shift workers. Anyone else ever realize their book selection method was totally backwards?

Hot take: I just finally got through 'Infinite Jest' after 3 false starts

For the past 8 months I've been trying to finish David Foster Wallace's 'Infinite Jest' for my local book club, and let me tell you, it felt like fixing a car with no manual. I kept getting stuck in the footnotes about halfway through the second chapter, losing track of which character was which. The group kept asking why I couldn't just read it straight through, like it was a light novel. After the third restart, I realized I needed to treat it like a puzzle, not a normal story, and mark key characters on sticky notes. It took me a full 10 weeks of on and off reading to finally close that book last Tuesday. Now I have to lead the discussion next week, and I'm worried I missed half the plot. Has anyone else here fought through a book that just refused to click?

Skipping the prologue actually made me enjoy a book more for once

I used to force myself to read every prologue because I felt like I was 'cheating' by skipping them. Then I tried it with a Brandon Sanderson novel, The Way of Kings, and the first 200 pages actually hooked me instead of dragging. My book club read a thriller last month and one dude would not let go of page 47. He kept saying the author hid a secret code in the paragraph about the lamp. Like the lamp description was some big clue. He had a whole theory about it involving the neighbor and a dog. We were all just trying to talk about the actual plot twist. Another member finally asked him straight up if he was joking. He got quiet for the rest of the meeting. Has anyone else had someone go off on a weird detail that nobody else could see?

Got told my book club picks were 'too safe' and it stung at first

So at my book club meetup last month, one of the quieter members said our selections were always 'safe and predictable' - like we never picked anything challenging. That audiobook I bought was 10 hours of a guy breathing into the mic

Last month I dropped $22 on an audiobook for my book club's monthly pick. It was some self-published thriller that got recommended in our group. The narrator sounded like he recorded it in a closet with a fan running. Every chapter had this heavy breathing and lip smacking sound. I made it 3 hours before I gave up and bought the paperback for $14. Then I had to finish it in 3 days to make the meeting. Has anyone else been burned by a bad audiobook narrator that ruined the whole experience?

The book club fight over a single comma in chapter 4

We were at the library in Lynnwood last Tuesday debating whether that comma in the first sentence of chapter 4 was a style choice or a typo. Half the group argued it changed the whole meaning, the other half said we were overthinking a 80 year old book. It got so heated Carol threatened to quit if we didn't move on. Now I can't read any punctuation without wondering if other people are having silent debates about it. Has anyone else had a book club derail over something this small?

Our book club meeting at the library downtown turned into a debate about whether the movie was better, and nobody touched the discussion questions I printed out.

I spent like two hours on those questions too. Highlighted passages and everything. We had a solid group of 8 people who all said they finished the book. But then Sarah brought up the ending scene in the movie and suddenly it was all about casting choices and soundtracks. I get it, the visual stuff is easier to talk about. But I really wanted to dig into why the main character made that choice in chapter 12. Has anyone else had their book club just completely ignore the book part?

TIL the hard way: never let the book club pick a debut novel for a potluck meeting

We had our monthly book club meeting at Maria's place last Friday. I was in charge of snacks. Everybody raved about this debut novel set in a fancy restaurant kitchen. Figured I'd go all out with some fancy appetizers from the actual recipes mentioned in the book. Spent 40 bucks on ingredients and 3 hours prepping. Nobody read past chapter 5. Turns out half the group hated the writing and just skimmed it. So there I was with a bunch of cold crab puffs and zero discussion. Has anyone else gotten burned by a book that looked good on paper but nobody actually finished?

Our book club's 'civil' debate about 'The Road' got so heated we had to move to a park

This was at my friend's apartment last month, and we were supposed to talk about the ending of 'The Road'. One person said the boy finding the family was a clear sign of hope, but another member, Dave, got really into it and said it was just more of the same bleakness. He actually stood up and started quoting pages, voice getting louder. It got so awkward the downstairs neighbor knocked on the ceiling. We all just packed up our books and wine and finished the argument on a picnic blanket at Grant Park. Now I always check if a book might cause a yelling match before I suggest it.
