Burnt out a dryer motor because I ignored a squeak for 2 months

Last month I finally got around to fixing a neighbor's dryer that had been squeaking since October. Turns out the idler pulley was completely seized and it took the motor with it. I felt like an idiot for not catching it sooner because I heard the same noise on my own dryer last year. Cost them $180 for a new motor assembly plus my labor. Any of you guys got a rule for how long you let a noise slide before you tear it down?

My office chair broke at 3pm and I missed the whole deadline

But I gotta say, I think open shelves are a terrible idea for anyone who actually cooks more than once a week. All that dust and grease from frying will settle on your dishes, and you'll be washing everything before you use it. Plus the realtor I talked to said they hurt resale value because buyers see them as impractical. Has anyone else found open shelves to be more trouble than they're worth?

Has anyone else run into this trick with rolling expanders on firetube boilers?
