Just spent 4 hours on a vintage receiver that had a single cold solder joint on the power board.

Ugh that's the worst! I read a whole article about how those old solder joints get brittle over time. The heat from the power board makes the metal expand and contract for years until it finally cracks. Honestly it's kinda amazing when the whole problem is just one tiny spot you can fix in two minutes after hunting for hours.

Had a kid's first haircut turn into a 45 minute standoff over the clippers

Hold up, you say a quick cut with tears shows them it's not a big deal. But doesn't the crying mean it IS a big deal to them in that moment? My nephew got a buzz cut like that and he was scared of the bathroom for a month because that's where it happened. How do you know they're just forgetting with the cookie and not learning to hide being scared?

Can we talk about the free coffee shop wifi in Boise?

Yeah, it's funny how we all just accepted public wifi as normal for years. Now it feels like you're taking a risk just checking your email.

Back when I started writing, I had to choose between a daily word count or a daily time goal.

Honestly the timer method saved my writing life too. Staring at a blank page trying to hit some number just killed all the fun. Setting a timer for like 45 minutes means I just have to show up, and whatever happens is fine. Some days I get a ton done, other days I just stare and delete stuff, but at least I did the thing. That habit is everything.

I always heard 'write what you know' was the golden rule, but the data says otherwise

Totally get what you mean, @sethm46, about the "best stuff comes from imagining." I tried writing only what I knew once and ended up with a thrilling story about forgetting my grocery list and the existential dread of the dairy aisle. Not exactly a bestseller.
