Learned the hard way that chain length isn't just about big-big

Had a shop vet in Portland tell me to always check chain length on the big-big combo plus two links. Ignored him on a gravel build last month and the chain was too slack in the small-small, dropped off twice on a descent. Anyone else had shifting issues from not double-checking chain wrap?

Hot take: French press vs pour over for a busy morning routine

I switched from my French press to a simple pour over setup last month after getting sick of cleanup taking 5 minutes every day (you know, the sludge and all). The pour over makes a cleaner cup and I'm done in half the time - anyone else find a method that saves them headache?

A customer told me my leaf springs looked 'angry' and it changed my heat treating

So this old timer comes into my shop last Tuesday, looks at a batch of leaf springs I just finished, and says 'these look angry, boy'. I had no idea what he meant lol. Turns out he was talking about how I was quenching them too fast, making the metal all stressed and brittle instead of tough. He showed me his method of a slower oil quench and letting the steel normalize for 20 extra minutes. Now my springs actually flex without snapping. Has anyone else had random advice like that just stick with you forever?

Debate: Is heat actually helpful for loosening old lens elements or does it cause more damage?

I keep seeing people online say to heat up a stuck lens ring with a hair dryer to break the seal. But I spent 5 years at a shop in Chicago and we never did that because the thermal shock can crack the glass or warp the brass helicoid. Last month I had a customer bring in a 1960s Nikkor that someone torched and the front element was totally seized from the expanded metal. On the other hand I get that some old lubricants get like glue after decades. What's your experience been with heat on old lenses has it ever worked for you without ruining things?

Finally gave in and tried a stud welder instead of body filler on that deep dent

I had this 2010 Civic rear quarter panel dent that was about 4 inches across and pretty deep. For years I always went the filler route because it was cheaper and faster. Last month I borrowed a stud welder from a buddy, spent about an hour pulling it, and the repair took maybe half the filler I would have used. The final finish is way smoother and I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner on bigger dents. Anyone else find stud welders worth the extra setup time?

Tried a new drysuit seal system and got a nasty surprise on a dive near Seattle

I swapped to those quick change silicone neck seals last month before a harbor cleanup job up near Seattle. First dive went fine, second dive I felt water trickling down my back about 15 minutes in. Turns out I didn't seat the seal ring properly and it popped loose at 30 feet. Lesson learned - test those new systems in shallow water first, not on a real job. Anyone else had issues with those quick change seals?

Was showing a dude how to set up a production run on the Haas VF-2 last Thursday and he says that right in front of our old timer foreman. Foreman just stared at him for like 20 seconds then walked off muttering about broken inserts. Has anyone else had a rookie say something that made the whole shop go quiet?

I caught myself gripping a pen like a caveman last Tuesday during a meeting and noticed my knuckles were white from the tension. AI writing tools feel soulless but saved me hours on a boring report

My boss had me write up this quarterly safety report for our crew. Usually takes me like 4 hours of staring at a blank screen. I tried one of those AI helpers just to get a first draft down. Took maybe 20 minutes and most of it was usable after I changed a few words. Still feels weird using it, like I'm cheating. But the time savings are real. Vent: That week I swore I'd never touch another Detroit Diesel 8.2L

Got a call from a farm outside Topeka for a dead irrigation pump engine. Spent four days chasing a no-start, replaced the injection pump, and still nothing. The owner finally mentioned he'd stored it over winter with regular diesel, not the red stuff. The entire fuel system was gummed solid with algae. Had to pull and clean every line and the tank. Ever seen a fuel filter you could plant flowers in?
