Merchant account hold up ate 11 business days of my float

I switched payment processors for my shop in Portland back in February, and they put a rolling reserve of 15 percent on my daily settlements with zero warning. It took 8 phone calls and a 3 page dispute form to get them to release the first chunk, because their risk team kept saying my 'volume spike' looked suspicious even though I sent them my tax docs twice. Has anyone else dealt with a reserve that lingered way past the stated 90 day window, or did I just get the unlucky end of the queue?

Two weeks to fix a QR code glitch at our small credit union

We rolled out QR payments for our members in February and the codes kept failing on Android phones after the first scan. Spent 3 years tapping my card wrong at the terminal in Chicago

Every single gas station and grocery store, I'd tap my card flat on the reader. It worked sometimes. Mostly I'd have to swipe or insert. Last week a cashier at a 7-Eleven turned the terminal sideways and said, 'you gotta tap the top edge, not the face.' Tried it. Worked every time since. All those beeps and errors for nothing. Anyone else been doing this wrong?

Rant: The ATM deposit envelope still confuses people in 2024

I was at a Chase ATM in Phoenix last week and watched three people in a row stuff cash into the deposit envelope without filling out the slip. They just put the money in and walked away. Now I get it, the machine reads the bills, but that envelope goes to a human if there's any issue. I used to work at a credit union in 2019 and we got missing funds claims every single week because of this. How do you usually handle mixed cash and checks at an ATM? Do you still use the envelope for everything just to be safe?

A bank teller in Tulsa caught something I missed for 9 months

I went in to deposit a check last Friday and the teller noticed my account had a monthly fee I never questioned. She pointed at the printout and said, "Looks like you've been paying for paper statements since March." I had no idea. I switched to eStatements right there and she reversed the charges on the spot. ACH push vs wire for same day, found a $12 way to skip the wait

I was stuck waiting on a vendor payment that kept getting held for 2 days through standard ACH. Looked into same day wire options from Chase, they wanted $35, but my credit union in Austin offers a same day ACH push for only $12 if you submit before 1:30 PM. Problem was the vendor listed only wire details, so I called their AP line and they gave me a routing number for ACH. It landed in 4 hours, should I just ask every vendor for ACH info now or is that a bad look?

I was digging into FedACH rules after a client in Phoenix asked why his Friday payment didn't show up until Monday. Turns out same-day ACH has cutoff times, and the final settlement batch runs at 3 AM Eastern, so "same day" really means "next business day after midnight" for most people. My credit union forced me into a real bank and I'm kinda glad

I used to be all in on my local credit union, been with them since 2014 for everything. Then they shut down the branch near my shop in Austin and the app kept glitching on mobile deposits. A customer told me to try a bigger bank with a physical location close by, so I moved my business account over 3 months ago. The transfer was a pain but now I get instant alerts and the teller actually knows my name. Anyone else get pushed out of a place they thought they'd never leave?

The ATM receipt that showed me I was double-paying my car loan for 9 months

I found out last Tuesday at a Bank of America ATM in Columbus that I had been manually paying my car loan while the auto-pay was ALSO on. I thought the extra balance was just interest or fees, but no. The receipt showed two separate payments to the same loan number, and I almost walked away without looking at it. It took a teller pointing out the duplicate transaction numbers for me to realize the system doesn't block double payments unless you set a flag. Debate: old school check signing vs. mobile deposit for business payments

I used to send paper checks for all my vendor payments. Had to sign each one, stuff envelopes, buy stamps. Took forever. Now I use mobile deposit for incoming checks and ACH for outgoing. Back in 2017 I was SO skeptical about depositing checks through my banking app. I kept driving 15 minutes to the nearest branch because I thought the app would glitch or the check would get lost. Then last year during a snowstorm in Chicago, my landlord's office was closed and I had a rent check due in 3 days. Rant: I used to just keep cash in my wallet like it was normal

Up until about two years ago I would grab 60 bucks from the ATM every Monday and just pay for everything with bills. Coffee at the corner shop, lunch at the deli, even my parking. Then my credit union added a debit card with 2% cash back on every purchase and I switched overnight. Now I use my card for literally everything and transfer that cash back into savings every month. I probably earned like 300 bucks last year just from buying the same stuff I already bought. Has anyone else done the math on what they're leaving on the table by not switching? I feel like an idiot for not figuring this out sooner.
