I finally stopped paying for credit monitoring services

After my bank notified me about a data breach last month, I realized I was paying $15 a month for a service that basically just shows me what I can check for free on Credit Karma. Just realized my neighbor's backyard bunker wasn't for storms

Last Tuesday I was trimming my hedges (the overgrown ones along the fence line) and I noticed this metal hatch poking out of my neighbor's garden bed. I asked him about it over the fence and he said it was an old storm shelter, but then he got all weird and walked away. Three days ago I saw a delivery truck drop off five boxes of military-grade MREs at his house around midnight. Now I'm wondering if he's prepping for something specific, or if he just likes canned pasta. Has anyone else dealt with a neighbor who might be building an underground network?

Debate: Should you sand between coats of finish on cabinets?

I had a old timer tell me last month that sanding between every coat of polyurethane is a waste of time and just causes dust nibs, so I tried skipping it on a set of oak kitchen cabinets I just finished. Honestly, the final coat looked smoother and had fewer imperfections than when I used to sand with 320 grit between each layer. Do you guys sand between coats or just rely on proper brushing technique?

Why does nobody talk about mud drying too fast in winter...

I was working a basement job in Denver last January and my all-purpose mud was skinned over in like 10 minutes. Had to keep adding water to the bucket just to get it to spread right... ruined my whole taping rhythm. Has anyone else ran into this with colder weather messing up their mix?

Why I stopped using my power hammer for certain jobs

I used to reach for my power hammer for every big job, but after a project last fall I had to make a choice. I was making a set of six gate hinges for a customer in Richmond and needed a consistent curve on each one. The power hammer was fast but I kept getting a slight variation I couldn't fix. So I switched to hand forging with a cross peen hammer and a swage block. It took me three hours longer per hinge but the curves came out exactly the same every time. The customer noticed the difference and paid me an extra $200 over my quote. Now I pick the method based on the part, not just how heavy it is. Has anyone else found that hand tools give you better control for smaller decorative pieces?

Vent: Fridge compressor swap I did 3 times before realizing my mistake

So I was working on this old Whirlpool fridge for a customer last week. I swapped the compressor, vacuumed it down, and it still wouldn't cool right. Did it all over again, same thing. Third time I finally noticed I had a tiny crack in the suction line from where I bent it too sharp getting it out. Cost me 3 hours and a new dryer each time. Anyone else ever miss something simple like that and beat yourself up over it?
