inCracked oak? My drill bit fix ended the splitting for good.
Cameron's point about dry oak having internal stress is spot on. That brittleness means the wood can fracture along hidden weak points, no matter how careful you drill. One thing that helps is to drill a pilot hole, then gradually step up the bit size before the final screw. Another tip is to rub a little soap on the screw threads to cut down on friction when driving it in.

inMy vacation in the redwoods changed how I plan anchor points

inMy frustration with how library late fees are handled
Saw something a while back about libraries that got rid of late fees completely. The stats showed more people actually started using the library again because they weren't scared of owing money. Seems like a no-brainer to just help people instead of punishing them.

inRobotic trash trucks are now a common sight on my morning walk
How do the robots deal with bins that are put out in the wrong spot? My town got automated street sweepers, and they had to add sensors to avoid parked cars. The city moved old staff to repair jobs, which cut complaints about lost work. It's quieter now, but you still see a human supervisor driving behind to check.
