Update: I used to think you should always tell the truth, even if it hurts.

I was talking to my sister last week about a friend who got a bad haircut. She asked me if she should say she liked it to be nice. I said yes, just be kind. She looked at me and said, 'But what if she goes back to that same person and gets another bad cut because she thinks it looks good?' That hit different. I always thought being honest was the only right thing, no matter what. Now I see it's not that simple. Sometimes a small lie can stop a bigger problem, like wasting more money. But then, is that really being a good friend? How do you decide when to be nice and when to be blunt?

Bought a $30 slow cooker from a yard sale and it's the best thing I ever did for my wallet

I was really tight on cash last month and saw this old crockpot for sale. Figured for thirty bucks, why not give it a shot. I've been making big batches of bean soup and cheap cuts of meat like pork shoulder, which costs maybe $8 to feed me for four days. It cooks while I'm at work so I don't get tempted to order takeout. Honestly, it's saved me more money in a few weeks than I spent on it. Anyone have other good 'set it and forget it' recipes for tough, cheap meat?

Our book club in Austin spent two meetings arguing about the ending of The Silent Patient

Half of us thought the twist was brilliant, the other half said it felt cheap and rushed. I got so tired of the same points being made that I made everyone write down their single biggest issue with the ending on a notecard before we talked. Seeing all the different problems laid out like that actually helped us move past just yelling 'I liked it' or 'I hated it' and get into the actual writing choices. Has anyone else tried a method like this to break a deadlock in their group?

Shoutout to the crew I saw using a laser level for a long vinyl run

Last week I was driving through a new subdivision in Springfield and saw a crew putting up a long section of vinyl privacy fence. What caught my eye was they had a rotary laser level set up on a tripod about fifty feet down the line. I pulled over to watch for a minute, which probably looked weird, but I had to see. They were using it to set the top rail perfectly level before even hanging a single picket. The foreman told me they started doing it on commercial jobs about three years back and it cut their time on long runs by almost a full day because they never have to go back and adjust sagging rails. I tried it myself on a 150-foot backyard job yesterday and it was a game changer. No more running a string line and having it get bumped. Has anyone else switched to using a laser for setting rails, or do you stick with the old string method?

Our book club's 'The Great Gatsby' meeting turned into a real fight last month.

It started when Sarah said Daisy was just a victim of her time, but Mark shot back that she was selfish and cruel. Voices got loud, and someone even quoted the book, saying, "They were careless people," to make a point. It got so heated that our host had to step in and change the subject. Rant: I started talking to my plants like they were coworkers and it fixed my watering schedule

For months, I kept killing a peace lily in my home office. I'd either drown it or forget it existed. After the third one started to droop, I got desperate. I read some old gardening forum post from 2009 that said to treat your plants like lazy employees who need a daily check-in. So, every morning when I sat down, I'd look at the lily and say something out loud like 'Alright, Frank, looking a bit pale. Need a drink?' or 'No, Frank, you had water yesterday, you're fine.' It felt completely stupid, but forcing myself to address it verbally every single day made me actually see its condition. I stopped guessing and started observing. The lily perked up in about two weeks and has survived for six months now. Has anyone else tried a totally silly mental trick that somehow worked?

Spent $3k on a booth at that tech expo last month and it was a total bust

We paid for a 10x10 spot at the Austin Convention Center event hoping to meet local founders. Barely anyone stopped by, and the few who did were just grabbing free pens. Our sales team stood around for two days straight with maybe five real conversations. I think these big generic expos are a trap for small Austin tech firms now. Has anyone actually gotten a solid lead from one of these things recently, or are we all just wasting money to look busy?

Switched from Procreate to Krita for my comic project and I'm not going back

Everyone in my circle swears by Procreate for everything, but I had to pick a tool for a 50-page comic. Procreate's file handling for big projects felt clunky, so I went with Krita for the full desktop workflow. After six months, the layer management and brush engine just work better for my process, even if the iPad crowd thinks I'm nuts. Anyone else made a switch that went against the popular choice?

I was cleaning up my profile and saw the post count. It's all from a single, five-year-long debate about whether the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion was actually good or just confusing... Question about a weird attic sensor placement that actually worked

Had a client in a 1920s house with a weird crawlspace that kept setting off the motion detector, so I moved it to a corner where the roof pitch meets the wall and angled it down. Anyone else have a go-to spot for tricky spaces like that?
