Update: I used to think you should always tell the truth, even if it hurts.

I was talking to my sister last week about a friend who got a bad haircut. She asked me if she should say she liked it to be nice. I said yes, just be kind. She looked at me and said, 'But what if she goes back to that same person and gets another bad cut because she thinks it looks good?' That hit different. I always thought being honest was the only right thing, no matter what. Now I see it's not that simple. Sometimes a small lie can stop a bigger problem, like wasting more money. But then, is that really being a good friend? How do you decide when to be nice and when to be blunt?

Feel that struggle deep in my bones. Watched a buddy keep going to a terrible barber because no one told him the truth. Sometimes kindness means saving someone from future regret, even if it stings a bit right now.

Oh man, I feel this! I told my cousin her new tattoo was awesome to avoid hurting her feelings, but now she's talking about getting a FULL sleeve from the same artist. It's such a tricky line between being supportive and being honest for their own good.

That "tricky line" thing reminds me of an article I read...
