The way people treat cold solder joints these days is wild

Ive been fixing electronics for about 15 years now and something that keeps bugging me is how younger guys call any joint that looks a little dull a cold joint. I had a kid in here last month saying my solder joints were cold because they werent shiny enough. I told him look at the flow its fine. I use good flux and a proper iron. Shiny doesnt always mean good and matte doesnt always mean bad. I learned that in 2009 when I was fixing an old amplifier. The original factory joints were all matte and they worked for 30 years. Now everyone thinks you need to reflow everything that isnt mirror bright. Has anyone else noticed this trend taking over the forums and youtube comments?

Was at a shop last week and heard a guy bragging about his $4,000 Snap-on scanner like it was a magic wand. Don't get me wrong, they're nice, but I still use my old Autel MaxiCOM from 2019 for 90% of diag work and it gets the job done. The expensive ones just add bells and whistles that most of us never touch on a daily basis. Anyone else feel like you can get by just fine with a midrange tool and good old fashioned troubleshooting?

I was barely putting any pressure on it, just a light tap from my mallet, and the blade just cracked at the handle on an oak tenon for a library bookcase I'm building in Springfield, has anyone else had a decent brand chisel fail like that out of nowhere?

Foam backed tape failed on a Ford F-150 trim piece last week

I was putting a side molding back on a 2019 F-150 and the double sided foam tape I grabbed from the shop shelf let go after just 2 hours. The whole trim piece popped off while the customer was still waiting in the lot. Has anyone else had bad luck with that generic foam tape for exterior trim jobs?

Everyone says drywall anchors are fine, but I found concrete screws work way better for hanging heavy shelves

Last month I wanted to hang a giant bookshelf in my living room and kept reading online that toggle bolts or those plastic anchors would hold it just fine. I got frustrated after the third anchor stripped out in my old plaster walls and I was standing at Home Depot staring at everything. On a whim I grabbed some Tapcon concrete screws and a masonry bit even though my walls aren't concrete at all. Turns out these screws bite into the wooden lath behind the plaster way better than any anchor I have used. The shelf has been up for 5 weeks now with like 40 pounds of books on it and it hasn't budged a millimeter. Has anyone else had way better luck using masonry screws in old plaster walls instead of the standard plastic anchors?

I was at a networking event in Edmonton last month, standing by the coffee table, when a personal injury lawyer told me he doesn't bother with Google reviews. He said he gets all his clients from referrals and past cases, so online reputation doesn't matter to him. I asked him how many potential clients under 40 he had turned away just because they searched his name and saw no recent feedback. He shrugged and said younger people don't hire lawyers anyway. I pointed out that my own firm saw a 30 percent jump in calls after we responded to every review for 3 months. He just walked off to grab a napkin. Has anyone else run into lawyers who think digital marketing is optional in a city like Edmonton?

Just spent an hour fixing a gate that sagged because of bad corner bracing

Put up a fence for a guy in Springfield last week, looked perfect when I left. Got a call yesterday that the gate wouldn't close. Drove back out and the whole corner post had twisted because I skimped on the diagonal brace. Had to dig it out, re-set it with proper bracing, and now I'm eating the cost of the extra concrete. Anyone else ever skip a step on a gate and regret it bad?
