Foam backed tape failed on a Ford F-150 trim piece last week
I was putting a side molding back on a 2019 F-150 and the double sided foam tape I grabbed from the shop shelf let go after just 2 hours. The whole trim piece popped off while the customer was still waiting in the lot. Has anyone else had bad luck with that generic foam tape for exterior trim jobs?

Had a buddy who tried that same foam tape on his Ram 1500's door molding. He thought he was saving a few bucks compared to the proper stuff. After a week it started peeling off on one side during a rainstorm. By the time he noticed it was dangling by a tiny corner and the rest was gone. He ended up having to buy a whole new trim piece because the old one got all bent up from flapping around. So yeah any savings went right out the window. That acrylic tape is the only way to go for anything that lives outside.

Oh man, that's rough. I had almost the exact same thing happen on a customer's Tacoma. Slapped some cheap foam tape on a fender flare, and within 3 hours the whole thing was hanging off while the guy was filling up at the gas station down the road. He came back looking like he wanted to strangle me. I tried to blame the heat that day but really it was just that garbage tape. Learned my lesson hard. Now I only use the 3M acrylic stuff too, even if it costs me a bit more.

I switched to 3M's exterior attachment tape after the same thing happened on a Silverado trim job. That foam stuff just doesn't hold up to heat and moisture like the proper acrylic tape does. Honestly it's worth the extra few bucks to avoid redoing the whole thing.
