Appreciation post: That senior lawyer who told me to stop chasing big billboards and just call every real estate agent in Edmonton

I was dead set on dumping our whole budget into a flashy billboard near the downtown core. A retired lawyer named Bob at a networking event told me it was a waste. He said instead call every real estate agency in the city and offer to do a free lunch and learn on wills and probate. I thought he was crazy. First call I made got me a meeting with a team of 12 agents. That turned into 4 referrals in the first month for way less than the billboard cost. Has anyone else found old-school cold calling beats flashy ads in Edmonton?

My neighbor insisted I should plant a clover lawn instead of grass

He said it stays green with half the water, so I ripped out my whole patch last spring and now it's full of weeds and dead patches during summer heat, has anyone else tried this and actually had it work out?

Watching her scan digital coupons from her phone in front of me at the register made me realize I was just being lazy about saving money, so now I spend 10 minutes on the app before shopping (how often do you all actually remember to use those things?)

Had a great week fixing old game consoles in Seattle

Last Tuesday someone dropped off a Sega Genesis that wouldn't power on. Turned out to be a blown capacitor near the voltage regulator. Fixed it in 20 minutes and the customer was so happy they brought in three more consoles the next day. Then on Friday I got a Game Boy Color with a dead screen and managed to swap in a new IPS kit without messing up the ribbon cable. Has anyone else had a run of easy repairs like that?

Spent $60 on a meal prep service and it actually saved me money on groceries

I was always throwing out half my veggies every week because I'd forget about them. So I signed up for one of those meal kit delivery things for a month at $60 per week. At first I thought it was just another money sink but then I actually added up what I normally spend on groceries and takeout. It came out to around $90 a week on average for just myself. The kit forces me to cook everything so nothing goes bad and I'm not ordering pizza on lazy nights. Plus I stopped buying random snacks because the meals fill me up better. Has anyone else found that paying a bit upfront actually cuts your food bill down?

The file naming trap that keeps killing collabs

I keep seeing creators in my circle mess up file names when sending stuff to editors. They'll name it 'final_v2.mp4' or just 'video.mov' and it drives me crazy. Last week I had a client send me 15 clips all named 'clip 1.mov' through clip 15.mov and I spent an hour sorting them out. This matters because if your editor is juggling 5 projects at once, bad names mean delays or wrong files getting used. I started using YYYY-MM-DD_ProjectName_Version format after I lost a sponsored segment that way. How do you guys name your files when sending to collaborators? Has anyone else had a project blow up because of this?

Why does everyone crop their digital paintings square for Instagram?

I was scrolling through the art showcase last night and saw like 15 amazing landscape pieces but they were all cropped to a 1:1 square, cutting off half the sky and ground. It completely ruins the composition and makes everything look cramped, especially for wide scenes or tall character portraits. Does anyone actually plan their canvas size around the crop or do you just post what fits and hope for the best?

Had a week where every YouTube recommendation was perfect and it spooked me

Last Wednesday every suggested video I got was exactly what I wanted to watch, even stuff I didn't know I'd like, and I felt weirdly watched and hollow after three days of binging. Is that a normal reaction or am I overthinking how well these algorithms know me?

Rant: I wasted $45 on a "book club analysis guide" that was just AI-generated trash

I joined a new book club last month and wanted to impress everyone with deep insights. So I bought this fancy guide for $45 that promised "expert level analysis" for our current read. Turns out it was just a bunch of generic summaries I could've Googled for free. The vocab definitions were wrong too. Spent a whole meeting quoting stuff that was factually off. Nobody said anything but I felt like a fool. Has anyone else fallen for those scam study guides online?
