Overheard my coworker bragging about her $500 grocery budget for a family of 4

I was getting coffee and she was telling someone how she spends $500 a month on food for her whole family. I nearly choked. I spend $400 just on me and I meal prep every single Sunday. She said she buys everything at Aldi and grows some herbs on her balcony. Made me realize I'm probably overpaying for brand name stuff at Publix. Gonna try switching stores next week and see if I can cut at least $50 off my bill. Has anyone else had a big drop just from changing where you shop?

I stopped by the main branch in Portland last weekend and there was this old wooden cabinet with actual index cards still in it. Does anyone else think we lost something when we swapped those out for digital search?

Switched to a 25 dollar mic stand after fighting a busted one for 6 months

I kept using this wobbly mic stand from a garage sale... it fell over during a client recording last Tuesday and I almost lost the audio. Finally grabbed a cheap K&M stand from a shop in Austin and it's night and day different. The thing just stays put, no tape needed. Has anyone else dealt with gear failing at the worst possible moment?

Met a guy at a bus stop who gave me the best job advice I ever got

I was waiting for the 7:15am bus last Tuesday in Austin and this older guy started chatting about the rain. He said he had been a mechanic for 40 years and the secret was just showing up 15 minutes early every day. He told me most people fail because they are always rushing in late. It sounds so simple but I tried it at my warehouse job and my boss actually noticed within a week. Has anyone else gotten life changing advice from a random stranger?

Went to a small bookstore in Austin and found they canceled a local author's book signing

I was at BookPeople in Austin last Saturday and overheard the staff talking about how they pulled a signing for a local poet named Sarah something. Apparently she posted something on Twitter about a political issue like 5 years ago and someone dug it up. The manager told a customer that they "don't want to platform hate speech" but it was just her saying she didn't like a certain policy. I think this is getting out of hand when you lose a book signing over a 5 year old opinion. Has anyone else seen their local shops cancel events over tweets people forgot about?

Cut a kid's ear three years ago and it still haunts me when I see a squirmy 8 year old walk in

I was at Barber Lounge in Austin, had this little dude jerking his head around while I was doing his fade, and instead of stopping I tried to push through it - now I always lock eyes with the parent first and say we're taking a breather if the kid can't hold still, anyone else got a similar horror story they can't shake?

Lost my tent stakes in the middle of nowhere and used rocks instead

I was hiking the Lost Coast Trail in California last month and my bag of tent stakes fell out somewhere on the beach. Ended up using big rocks and driftwood to hold down my tent through a windy night, and honestly it held up better than my old stakes ever did. Has anyone else had to MacGyver their camp setup with whatever was lying around?

Warning: A customer's quick comment about brake cable friction got me thinking

I was tuning up a hybrid bike yesterday and the owner mentioned he noticed the brakes felt sluggish after new cables were installed. He said his old mechanic always told him to use a specific cable routing path on that frame. Has anyone else found that cable housing length adjustments made a bigger difference than they expected?

Had to pick between hardwired and wireless for a 3-story office building

I got a contract to do a 3-story office building downtown last month and had to decide if I'd run all the cabling or just go with wireless sensors. Picked hardwired because the customer was worried about battery life and signal drop on the top floor. Took me 4 extra days to fish wires through the ceiling but it was rock solid on the final test. The wireless quote I gave would have saved them $1,200 but they said they liked the idea of no batteries to change. Anyone else run into clients who push for one over the other and regret it later?
