Took 20 minutes to put up a shelf, 3 days to fix the wall

I bought one of those floating shelves from Target for my bathroom in Austin. The instructions said 15 minutes tops, but the drywall anchors just spun and pulled out when I hung it. I ended up patching the holes with spackle, waiting overnight, sanding, repainting, and trying again with toggle bolts. Three days later it finally holds, but now I wonder if every DIY video just skips the part where things go wrong or if I'm the only one this happens to?

Last March we were bootstrapping a small SaaS in Austin and I kept skipping the cyber liability policy because it felt like a money grab. My boss's 'just wing it' advice for the inspection backfired hard

Had my quarterly property inspection in Phoenix last month. My manager told me to just wing it, said tenants dont care about the walkthrough details, just want the signature. I followed that advice, missed a cracked window seal in unit 3B, tenant filed a complaint the next week about a wasp nest getting in. Now I got a formal write up and a 2 hour re-inspection with the regional director. Has anyone else gotten career advice that sounded good in the moment but blew up in your face?

I finally saw BIM software fail live at a job site in Austin

Was on a remodel job last Tuesday, crew was all set to cut a chase for new ductwork based on the model. Foreman pulls up the tablet, coordinates look perfect, then the actual wall turns out to be 4 inches thicker than the scan showed. We had to stop everything and redo the layout on paper. Three hours lost and the project manager just laughed saying, 'garbage in, garbage out.' Has anyone else had a model that was way off from reality and how do you catch it before it costs you a whole morning?

Took me 4 years to stop greasing press-fit BBs

Used to grease every press-fit bottom bracket on install. Carbon frame, alloy frame, all of it. Thought I was doing it right. Then a BB30 started creaking after 200 miles. Took it apart and the shell was slick, bearing spun loose in there. Shop owner in Austin told me grease is for threads, not press fits. Use retaining compound or nothing. Switched to cleaning the shell with alcohol and dry pressing. Two years now, zero creaks. Anyone else get burned by this early on?

Three years ago I called out a coworker for stealing credit and I still get the cold shoulder

Back in 2022 I had this project at the mail sorting facility in Fresno where I put together a new route plan that cut our overtime by 15%. My supervisor, Dan, presented it to the district manager like he came up with it, didn't even say my name once. I waited until the next team meeting and just said, 'Dan, why didn't you mention I built that route model?' in front of everyone. He went red and mumbled something about 'collaborative effort' and ever since then the whole crew treats me like I'm radioactive. People at this job act like calling out a lie is worse than telling one, and I'm tired of it. Has anyone else ever burned a bridge just by asking for basic credit where you work?

Took the fiber route over coax for a tricky pull, glad I did

Had a job last week in an older building downtown, ran into a brutal 80-foot conduit that was already stuffed. I could go with the usual RG6 or switch to a smaller fiber cable, and honestly I almost chickened out and stuck with coax. Decided to try the fiber because the bend radius was kinder for that tight corner near the riser. It took about 20 extra minutes but the whole pull went smooth and the signal test came back perfect. Anyone else swap materials mid-job and regret or love it?

Pro tip: that $45 windshield repair kit made things worse

I tried one of those DIY resin kits on a crack near the edge of my windshield last week, and now the whole thing spiderwebbed across the driver's side. Cost me $45 for the kit, then $280 for a replacement at the shop on 12th street. Has anyone else had a mobile repair guy do a better job for around the same price, or is it always a gamble?

Vent: that collab guy who ghosted me after I sent him the raw footage

We filmed a 12 minute podcast at his place in Austin last month, I edited the whole thing overnight, and when I sent him the link he said he'd 'circle back' and then never replied. Has anyone else had a collab partner just vanish after you did ALL the heavy lifting? What do you even do with the footage at that point?

Tried a super cheap drawing tablet versus my trusted screen tablet and wow what a difference

So I picked up a no-name tablet from Amazon for $40 to use on the go. I figured it would be fine for quick sketches but the cursor lagged like crazy. My old Huion screen tablet took me 3 years to save up $300 for and it tracks my pen instantly. The cheap one had so much parallax I kept missing my lines. After 2 days I went back to my screen tablet and finished that character piece in under an hour. Has anyone else regretted buying a budget tablet just to save money?
