My electric mandoline almost got me - now I only use the guard

I spent years laughing at coworkers who bothered with the finger guard on those things. Thought I was too careful, you know? Last Tuesday I was slicing 40 pounds of potatoes for a catering gig and my hand slipped. Took a chunk out of my thumb that needed 4 stitches. Now I use the guard every single time. Anyone else have a close call that changed how you do a basic task?

That one door lock switch ate up my whole Tuesday

Had a call at the old county courthouse in Salem, car kept skipping floors. I spent almost 4 hours chasing a phantom fault, checked the encoder, the brake, even redid the leveling. Turned out it was a worn down door lock roller switch that only acted up when the temperature dropped below 50. Has anyone else had a simple limit switch turn into a whole day ordeal?

Customer argued his quarter panel patch was good enough and I showed him why it wasn't

Had a guy come in last Tuesday with a 98 Civic he tried to fix himself. He used a piece of sheet metal from Home Depot and riveted it over the rust hole on the rear quarter. I told him that's gonna bubble in 6 months and he got defensive saying it's fine for a beater. I took him to the back and showed him my rotisserie setup with a 2002 Corolla I was doing proper patch panels on. He watched me weld in a 14 gauge panel and grind it smooth, then he asked how much I'd charge to undo his mess. I quoted him $400 just for the metal work and he just nodded.

Unpopular opinion: skip the drywall primer, just use paint with primer built in

I painted my whole living room with Behr Marquee one coat stuff and it saved me like $40 on primer and an afternoon of work. No peeling or bubbles after 6 months, has anyone else tried this and had it hold up long term?

That $250 air purifier I bought stopped working after 3 months

I got this fancy unit from an online ad back in June because the wildfire smoke was brutal here in Portland. The fan just quit last week with no warning, and the company's support line is a loop of automated messages. Has anyone else had luck fixing these things on their own, or am I stuck tossing a broken machine into the landfill?

I finally chose a cheaper gym over the fancy one with a pool

Ngl, I was paying $89 a month for a gym in downtown Nashville that had towel service and a smoothie bar. Switched to a basic Planet Fitness for $10 a month and honestly I don't miss the extras. That $79 savings let me fix my truck's AC when it died in July. Has anyone else cut a big monthly bill and barely noticed the difference?

Caught a senior programmer at a shop in Toledo using a dry erase marker on his inspection sheet

I was at this job shop in Toledo last month helping a buddy with a tight tolerance run on some aluminum parts. This old guy who programs the Haas machines there wrote his offsets right on the paper with a dry erase marker. Said he's been doing it for 20 years so he can wipe mistakes off fast. It looked stupid at first but then I tried it on my own setup sheet back at my shop. Actually works better than pencil or pen when you're making quick tweaks on the fly. Has anyone else seen weird little hacks like that from the old timers?

Appreciation post: That backup immersion circulator I thought was a waste

I thought my apartment was too small for a compost bin until I tried a trick with my freezer

My building in Phoenix doesn't have compost pickup, and I felt bad throwing food scraps in the trash. I saw a tip online about keeping a small bag in the freezer for scraps like coffee grounds and vegetable peels. I tried it for a month, and it stopped the smell and fruit flies I got from a countertop bin. Now I drop the frozen bag at a community garden bin every few weeks. Has anyone found other good ways to compost without a yard?
