Pro tip: don't buy a fancy pH meter for your first few batches of kraut like I did. Wasted $80 on something I barely used.

Ever notice how this happens with every new hobby? You buy the gear before you know if you'll stick with it, like @the_alice said. It's a weird mix of excitement and wasting money.

Yeah, that "fancy pH meter" thing is so real. I did the same with a special fermentation weight set, used it once and now it just lives in a drawer. For kraut, you really just need a jar, some salt, and cabbage. All the extra gear can wait until you're doing like, hot sauce or something trickier where the pH actually matters a lot more.

Right, but how do you even know when to buy the gear? I feel like you only learn what you actually need after messing up a few simple batches. By then you've already wasted money on stuff that seemed important.
