inMy star tracker just died on me during a clear night in Sedona
That grinding noise is a BAD sign, usually means stripped gears inside the motor. Repair costs can get close to just buying a new tracker, which is a total bummer. I'd call a few camera shops in Phoenix first to get a quote, but mentally prepare to replace it. Losing a clear night in Sedona over a gear failure is the actual worst feeling.

inI used to think you needed a pro to install a tile backsplash
Bro right? That first row is the whole job. I used a laser level and still checked it with a 4-foot spirit level across three tiles. If that base is off by even a little, every cut after it just gets worse. Once you get past that, the rest is just putting one tile after another. It's way less scary than it looks.

inBack when I started writing, I had to choose between a daily word count or a daily time goal.
Totally get this. I started with a word count too and it made me hate writing. Switched to a simple one hour timer and it changed everything. Like milam48 said, making you want to keep going is the point. For me, the time goal built the habit without the guilt. Some days the writing was good, some days it wasn't, but I was always there at the desk. That consistency is what finally got me finishing projects.

inThat old-timer at the Kentucky Horse Park said 'a good farrier listens to the horse, not the owner' and it's stuck with me for years.
My farrier always says you can't fix a problem you don't see. I've seen horses get real sore from owners missing early signs in their feet. Waiting for a limp means the horse was already hurting for a while. Regular checks are part of the job, not something to ignore. It just seems like a basic duty to me.

inSerious question, did you ever realize you were the one derailing the book talk?
Wait you had to hide the remote from him? That's next level annoying! I would have lost my mind if someone kept pausing the movie to give a lecture. It totally kills the mood and you just want to watch the story happen. Good on you for finding a way to shut that down, because some people really don't get the hint.
