TIL using a 6 inch taping knife on butt joints saves me time

I been doing butt joints with my 10 inch knife for like 5 years. Last week on a job in Oak Park I tried a 6 inch for the first coating and man it was way easier to control the mud. Less sanding fixups too. Anyone else use a smaller knife for the first pass?

Just heard a podcast with a veteran taper who swore by a 6 inch for the first coat on butt joints, said it saves him half the sanding time. @cora518 nailed it, going smaller is such a counterintuitive hack. I still grab a bigger knife for the final skim but that first pass with a 6 inch is a game changer for controlling the mud. Definitely less time fixing mistakes after it dries.

Has anyone tried combining the 6 inch first coat with a lighter mud mix on butt joints? I started adding a splash more water to my all-purpose compound for that initial pass and it flows even smoother with the smaller knife. Cuts down on the ridges you gotta knock down later.

Funny how going smaller makes things cleaner, same trick works when fixing a squeaky door hinge.

Going smaller makes things cleaner" totally applies to decluttering my garage too, less stuff means less mess.
