TIL using a 6 inch taping knife on butt joints saves me time

I been doing butt joints with my 10 inch knife for like 5 years. Last week on a job in Oak Park I tried a 6 inch for the first coating and man it was way easier to control the mud. Less sanding fixups too. Anyone else use a smaller knife for the first pass?

Switched from QuickBooks to a paper ledger for my shop and it's actually working better

I know that sounds crazy in 2025 but after my QuickBooks subscription jumped to $85 a month last fall I got fed up. My accountant neighbor said just try a ledger for a few months see what happens. I've been tracking everything by hand since November and honestly I catch more mistakes. I used to just punch numbers in and hope they were right. Now I actually look at every single transaction. The downside is it takes longer at the end of the day maybe 20 minutes vs 5. But I saved $340 already. Has anyone else gone backwards on software for their business?

Found a guy mudding over outlet boxes last week and it drove me nuts

So I'm on this job in a basement finishing project, and the electrician already ran his rough-in. I come back to hang board, and the homeowner's buddy had already started taping. Idk what he was thinking, but he mudded right over a round outlet box like it wasn't there. I mean, you gotta at least cut your boxes out before you finish, right? Has anyone else run into people skipping the box cutouts and just burying them?

Hit 10,000 questions answered on a Q&A site last night

I've been answering questions on this one forum for about 4 years now. Nothing serious, just stuff I know about like fixing old motorcycles and basic home plumbing. Last night I noticed my counter hit exactly 10,000 answers. That number surprised me because it's a lot of random typing. I never thought I'd have that much to say about drain snakes and carburetors. The weird part is I've gotten maybe 30 thank you messages total in all that time. But a few people told me I saved them a service call bill. That makes the whole thing feel worth it. Has anyone else hit a big milestone like that on a forum and felt kinda weird about it?

Dropped $150 on a heated cat bed and my cat sleeps on the cardboard box it came in instead

I bought that fancy self-warming cave bed off Etsy three weeks ago thinking my senior cat would love it for her arthritis, but she literally chose the crumpled shipping box over the $150 heated bed I set up right next to it does anyone else's pet just completely ignore what you spend good money on?

Just passed 200 covers on a Friday by myself and I'm still buzzing

I've been a line cook for 3 years but last Friday I ran the entire station solo and hit exactly 207 covers. Has anyone else hit a surprising number that made you realize you've gotten way faster than you thought?

Heard a senior mechanic say torque wrenches are just suggestions - that scared me

I was helping a guy with a Cessna 172 flap cable adjustment last week, and he told me he never uses a torque wrench on control surface bolts because 'you can feel it.' I showed him the maintenance manual where it calls for 20-25 in-lbs on the hinge bracket fasteners, and he just shrugged. Has anyone else run into old-timers who ignore torque specs on flight control hardware?

Had an old timer tell me my mortar mix was too wet last month

Rant: That iconic Pillars of Creation photo is NOT what most people think

I read an article from NASA's website last week that totally changed how I see that famous 1995 Hubble image. Turns out those pillars are actually being DESTROYED by radiation from nearby stars, and they probably already collapsed about 6,000 years ago. The photo we all love is basically a ghost picture of something that doesn't exist anymore. Everyone treats it like this timeless space wonder, but really it's a snapshot of destruction. Why do astronomy groups keep acting like it's some peaceful scene when the science says otherwise? Has anyone else looked into the actual timeline of that nebula?
