Just saw my own agency's ad show up for a totally wrong search term

I was checking our Google Ads for a local dentist client, and our own agency's ad popped up when I searched 'emergency tooth pain'. We don't even do dental work. It clicked because I was logged into the manager account, and I saw we'd spent $22 last month on clicks from people looking for a dentist, not a marketing agency. The tip-off was seeing our phone number in the ad preview. It means our location targeting or keywords have been messed up for months. Has anyone else had their own ads waste budget showing for the wrong services? How do you catch this faster?

Yeah, that's a classic keyword match type problem. Broad match can really get away from you, pulling in searches that are only loosely related. You need to check the search terms report at least once a week, not just glance at the keywords you set. It's the only way to see what people actually typed before they clicked. Adding all those irrelevant searches as negative keywords is a never ending job, but it's the only fix. Letting it run for months means you've been paying for a lot of useless clicks.

Remember my friend who ran ads for his bike shop? He found out his ad was showing for "motorcycle repair" searches for like three months (cost him a few hundred bucks before he noticed). He only caught it because a customer asked if he fixed Harleys.
