Can we talk about the airline gate agent in Atlanta who made me check my bag?

She said the overhead bins were full but I watched 3 people after me walk on with full sized rollers. Am I the only one who thinks they just pick random passengers to gate check?

Had to pick between a wide field and a close up shot of the Milky Way last night

I was out at this little spot near a creek about 20 miles outside of town, trying to get a good photo of the summer Milky Way. My camera was set up on the tripod and I had two lenses with me, a 14mm wide angle and a 50mm. I kept going back and forth on which one to use because the wide angle would get the whole arc but the 50mm would catch way more detail in the core. I ended up going with the 50mm because I figured I could always stitch a panorama later, but then the clouds rolled in after only 15 minutes of clear sky. The close up shot I got is pretty sharp but I missed the full view entirely. Has anyone else had to make that snap decision and regretted one choice over the other?

Looter trench at Tell Hamoukar changed my whole approach to field work

I was digging at Tell Hamoukar in Syria back in 2008 when a team accidentally walked into a fresh looter trench that cut straight through a 4000 year old kiln. It was 6 feet deep and they had a backhoe. That moment split me between two camps: do we spend time documenting every looter hole or just focus on untouched areas we can save? The site lost maybe 30 percent of its urban center to those holes. Anyone else torn between salvage work and ignoring the damage to push forward on new discoveries?

Found a trick for cleaning out really wet creosote without the mess

I had a job last week in Portland where the homeowner had been burning unseasoned wood all winter. The creosote was this thick, tar-like mess that usually takes forever to scrape and leaves black sludge everywhere. I tried using a shop vac with a drywall bag first, but it just clogged up after five minutes. Then an old timer I know told me to hit it with a heat gun on low for a few seconds before scraping. It softened that gunk just enough that it peeled off in strips instead of smearing around. Cut my cleaning time on that job from two hours down to about 45 minutes. Anyone else got a weird trick for dealing with wet creosote that actually works?

My coworker swore the algorithm would find me better dates than my own swipes do

He kept saying let the app do the work, so I tried letting it pick for a whole month. Every match was either a bot or someone who lived 200 miles away. Has anyone else had the algorithm completely miss the mark like that?

Shoutout to the lady who called out my choppy layers at the grocery store

Was grabbing milk at Publix on Tuesday and a woman stops me to say my haircut looked like I did it blindfolded. She was right, I rushed through a client's curtain bang trim and my own hair paid the price. Made me realize I need to slow down no matter how backed up I am. Anyone else get called out by a stranger on their own work?

Chat with an old pipefitter changed how I look at joint prep

He told me he never uses a grinder for bevels, just a torch and a file, and after watching him nail a perfect fit-up on a 6 inch schedule 80 in 15 minutes I started wondering if I am overcomplicating things - anyone else ever get humbled by a simple old school method?

Neighbor said my fire pit was too close to the fence... saved me a headache

I had this fire pit setup right near the back fence for like two years. Thought it was fine. Then my neighbor Gary came over one evening and pointed out the fence boards were starting to warp from the heat. Said if a spark caught the dry grass underneath I could be looking at replacing a whole section of fence or worse. So I moved it about 8 feet further into the yard and put down a ring of pavers. Took me a Saturday afternoon. Now I feel way better about having people over. Has anyone else had a neighbor call them out on something that actually made things safer?

Lost my keys at the Everett marina last Saturday and found them with a trick

I was dropping off crab pots at the 10th Street boat launch and dropped my keys right into the gravel. After 20 minutes of digging around, I used a strong magnet from my tackle box to sweep the area and pulled them up from under a rock. Has anyone else used a magnet for lost metal stuff around here?

I finally realized why my realtor kept pushing me toward that specific lender

When I was buying my first place last year in Austin, my agent kept steering me to this one mortgage broker. At first I thought she was just getting a kickback, but she explained that some lenders flat out will not close on time. Turns out she had a file full of deals that fell through because buyers picked some online bank that took 60 days to underwrite. I think a lot of people don't get how much a slow lender can kill your offer if you're in a competitive market. Has anyone else had an agent get pushy about a lender and it actually worked out?
