Why is every bag of shredded cheese stuck together now
I grabbed a bag of shredded cheddar from the Kroger on 5th street yesterday and it was basically one solid brick, I had to beat it against the counter just to get a handful for my tacos. Even the fancy organic brand my roommate buys does the same thing, it never used to be like this when I was a kid. Is it the anti-caking powder they use now or are they storing the bags at a weird temp during shipping? Has anyone else noticed this or am I just buying from the wrong store?
The "beat it against the counter" part made me laugh because I did the exact same thing last week with a bag of mozzarella, except I got a little too into it and the bag split open and cheese went flying all over my kitchen floor. My dog was thrilled, I was not. What I figured out was that my fridge has this one cold spot in the back where stuff freezes just a tiny bit, and if the cheese sits there for a few days it clumps up like that, even the fresh bags. Moved it to the door shelf and the next bag stayed loose, so now I keep shredded cheese away from the back wall no matter what brand it is. It sounds dumb but it actually made a difference for me. Could be your store's cooler or the trip home too, but worth checking where you're putting it once it's in your fridge.
