Update: Got chewed out by a manager for cleaning my station after a rush
I work at a busy breakfast spot on weekends, and last Saturday after the 11am rush I started wiping down my section and restocking napkins. The manager came over and told me to stop because it 'looked bad for customers coming in for lunch.' She said they want the place to look busy and lived in, not sterile like a hospital. I was just trying to stay ahead so I wouldn't be drowning during the next wave. But apparently showing some initiative is a problem when it clashes with their vibe strategy. Has anyone else dealt with a boss who punishes you for being proactive about cleaning?

Wait, did she really say they want the place to look "lived in" like that's a good thing for a restaurant? That's just code for letting mess pile up so new customers think the place is popular and busy. I get the concept of wanting a restaurant to look lively, but there's a huge difference between a lived-in vibe and a dirty table with sticky napkin holders. If you're wiping down your section between rushes, that's called being a responsible employee, not making the place look like a hospital. Honestly, it sounds like your manager is confusing atmosphere with laziness, and that's going to backfire when the lunch crowd walks in and sees trash from the breakfast shift still sitting there.
