Forgot to lock the truck tailgate and lost $150 worth of lumber

I was loading up at Lowe's in Austin last Saturday after picking out about 30 2x4s for a deck repair. Got distracted by my phone ringing, finished loading, and drove off without even checking the tailgate latch. Made it about 3 miles down the road before I heard a loud bang and saw boards scattering everywhere in my rearview mirror. Spent the next hour picking up splintered wood from the shoulder and had to go buy new lumber, which cost an extra $75 I didn't budget for. Anyone else ever lose gear from a truck bed because of a dumb oversight?

Yeah that stinks! I once lost a whole toolbox going over a bump because I forgot to latch my truck bed.

Gotta call you out a little on that, fiona. Losing lumber on a highway can actually be a really big deal. I've seen a 2x4 bounce off someone's hood and crack their windshield, almost caused a pileup. It's not just about the cost of the wood, it's about the guy behind you getting a board through his radiator. So yeah, it stinks for the driver but it's also a safety thing for everyone else on the road. I'd say that's more than just an inconvenience.

Honestly that sucks but losing lumber isn't exactly a tragedy.
