My 'free' VPN cost me $75 in bank fees last month

I downloaded one of those popular free VPN apps for my phone, thinking it would keep my public Wi-Fi browsing safe. Turns out it was selling my data and someone got into my bank account, making three small test charges from another country. The bank flagged it, but I still had to pay the $25 fee for each of the three foreign transactions to get a new card. Has anyone found a trustworthy VPN that doesn't break the bank?

Wasn't using public Wi-Fi without any protection just asking for trouble?

The real problem is how many apps leak data even on safe networks. A study last year found over 60% of popular apps sent user info to third parties without clear permission. So your banking app might be secure, but your weather app or a game could be giving away your location and device details. That happens on any connection, making the Wi-Fi itself just one part of a bigger privacy mess.

ProtonVPN's free tier is actually solid.
