Actually, being strict about meditation rules kinda misses the point. If your mind wanders to your phone, that's just what your brain is doing right then. Noticing that urge and choosing to check it is its own kind of mindfulness. The goal isn't to be perfect, it's to be aware. So you noticed a thought about your phone and acted on it, big deal. That's way more real than pretending you're some zen master in a silent room.
