Backlash comp on old Haas vs. newer Fanuc controls, which way do you dial it in?

I used to always split the difference and run a test cut three times to find the sweet spot on the old machine at my last shop, but now on this newer one I just bump it .001 at a time and check the backlash parameter directly from the manual, does anyone else have a preferred method that just works better for them or am I overthinking this?

I used to always split the difference" - that's exactly what I did for years on my old Haas. I do the same .001 bump method you're using now on my newer Fanuc, and it saves me so much time versus running test cuts over and over.

Learned that trick the hard way after accidentally making a .005 cut and spending an hour twiddling my thumb while it air-cut back to size on my old machine. Now I call my .001 bumps "retirement insurance" since they keep me from getting fired before I can actually retire. Guess some of us just gotta learn by breaking stuff first.

Ha, "retirement insurance" - I like that. I've got my own version of that called "lunch insurance" since I'd rather spend my break eating than watching an air cut. I still have nightmares about the time I tried to get clever and do a .003 finish pass on a brand new jaw set. That "quick final touch" turned into a geometry lesson real fast when I realized I had to re-indicate everything. These days I treat every .001 move like it's my last one, because honestly with my luck it might be.
