Hot take: I used to swear by a 12-inch knife for cutting carpet, but switching to a 6-inch changed my whole game.

Yeah, it's all about control. That shorter blade lets you pivot on curves and get into tight corners without the whole thing binding up. I found I waste less material now because I'm not fighting the tool.

Reminds me of learning to drive stick shift, that same feel for the clutch.

Exactly, @the_taylor. That control from a shorter blade also seems to give you more feel for the material, so you can make smaller adjustments on the fly.
