Tried to cut crown molding with a miter box versus a compound miter saw

Spent half a day fighting with the hand saw and the box, getting maybe one decent cut. Borrowed my buddy's DeWalt saw and had all the pieces for the bay window done in 20 minutes. Anyone have a go-to trick for setting those tricky spring angles?

Skip the math and cheat with a block. Cut a scrap piece of crown and hold it in the corner. Trace the bottom edge on the wall and the top edge on the ceiling. Measure that angle on your saw and just use it. It works every time for me.

That's a solid trick for sure. My dad taught me something similar with a piece of cardboard before fancy tools were a thing. It's wild how many ways there are to get to the same cut. I guess @josephadams has the right idea with the angle finder for speed, but sometimes the old hacks just feel more satisfying when they work.

Totally agree with @josephadams, that digital angle finder is a total game changer for crown.

Honestly, just cheat and use an angle finder. Saves a ton of guesswork.
