Shoutout to the guy who told me my spines were too tight

Some random bookbinder at a shop in Portland pointed out I was gluing my spines way too snug, which explained why my books never laid flat. I loosened up by about 2mm on my last project and the difference was night and day. Anyone else get a tip that made them rethink their whole process?

My friend Sarah had a similar thing happen at a book arts center in Chicago. She was using way too much PVA on her spines and someone showed her how to do a thinner coat with a stiffer brush. She said her books went from looking like lumpy pancakes to actually sitting flat on a table. It took her like 5 tries to get the hang of it but now she swears by that method.

Five tries sounds about right.
