A customer's freehub was full of glitter from a parade
Had a bike in the shop with a totally seized freehub, wouldn't spin at all. When I popped it open, it was packed with this fine, colorful glitter (like from a kid's craft project, but everywhere). The rider said they did a holiday parade last month and must have rolled through a bunch of it. I got it cleaned up, but I'm still finding sparkles on my bench a week later.

Always figured glitter was just annoying to clean up. Seeing it actually lock up a freehub makes you realize how abrasive that stuff really is.

Glitter's basically tiny shards of plastic or metal. Those edges cut into moving parts way worse than sand or dirt. Heard from a mechanic friend that glitter contamination is a nightmare in bike hubs and even computer fans. Makes you wonder about all the craft supplies we use without a second thought.

Yeah, piperbailey is right about that abrasive quality. That stuff is basically a destructive paste when it gets in moving parts. Glad you got it cleaned up.
