inI switched from airlocks to the cloth and rubber band method for my kimchi
Wasn't there a study about how some ferments actually need a tiny bit of oxygen to develop their full flavor? I read that in a blog post from a fermentation teacher, and she said cloth covers let in just the right amount for veggies like kimchi. It makes sense if the old way makes it taste better!

inRant: I cut dadoes freehand for a built-in bookcase and it actually worked
Old houses demand that kind of improvisation. The square jigs just collect dust when every wall is out of whack. Sometimes the best tool is just a sharp pencil and a steady hand.

inTIL that booking a flight on a Tuesday is actually a myth for saving money
I used to swear by the Tuesday rule for years. After tracking prices for a trip to Chicago last fall, I noticed the lowest fares actually showed up on Friday afternoons three weeks out. It made me realize how much these old travel hacks just stick around even when they stop working.

inTIL my neighbor throws out leftover rice every time because she thinks it's unsafe to reheat.
My mom used to do the same thing until I showed her how to cool it fast in a baking dish.
