Tried making a mirror glaze cake for a party, total disaster
Wasted $35 on fancy chocolate and gelatin sheets for it to look like a melted crayon puddle. My kitchen looks like a crime scene. Anyone have a foolproof shiny frosting that doesn't require a chemistry degree?

My third attempt needed a thermometer and it still cracked. David_jones38 is right about ganache, it's just chocolate and cream. You can make it shiny if you warm your knife and smooth it fast. Mirror glaze is for people who hate having free time or a clean kitchen. A good buttercream polished with a hot spoon looks great without the mess.

Remember my buddy's wedding cake? His wife tried mirror glaze. Looked amazing for ten minutes. Then it slid off like a shiny mudslide.

Okay but melted crayon puddle is kind of the vibe though? My first mirror glaze looked like a unicorn threw up, but everyone at the BBQ still ate it. The shiny part is just for pics, the taste is what matters. Maybe try a simple ganache drip next time, way less stress and still looks pro.
