My town's water report said we used 12 million gallons in a single day last July. That number just hit me.

That's a lot, but it's also a single day in the middle of summer. Lawns, pools, kids running through sprinklers. For a whole town, spread across a month, the daily average is probably way lower.

You're totally right, it's all about the average. My water bill last July was insane from filling the kids' pool twice a week and trying to keep the grass alive. Looking at the whole year, it balances out to something way more normal. Makes that one summer day seem less crazy, doesn't it?

Still seems like a crazy high number for one day though... even with all that stuff going on. Makes you wonder where it all actually goes.
