What he ended up doing was keeping one in his jacket pocket right against his chest and swapping it in only when he was ready to shoot, then the cold one went back in the pocket to warm up. He also started carrying those cheap hand warmer packets in the same pocket with the spare, said it helped a lot. The sock thing works fine but your body heat plus a hand warmer is the real trick.
