Ditched my dream of being a musician after bombing an open mic in Austin

I was 22 and thought I had the whole singer-songwriter thing figured out. Practiced for weeks, drove 3 hours to Austin, and got on stage at this little dive bar on 6th Street. First chord I hit, my guitar string snapped and I just froze, like a total deer in the headlights. I mumbled through half a song before walking off, and that was it, I never picked up a guitar again. Anyone else have a moment where one bad night killed a whole dream?

Shoutout to the old timer who showed me my notch cuts were all wrong

I'd been doing conventional notches for 5 years until a retired climber watched me fell a maple in Portland and told me my hinge wood was way too thick. He pulled out a sharpie to draw the right Humboldt cut on the bark, and now my trees land exactly where I want them. Has anyone else had a simple trick from a veteran totally change their felling game?

Old school stylist told me to stop over-mixing color and she was 100% right

A stylist named Carol who's been doing hair for 30 years watched me mix a level 6 neutral with a level 7 ash blonde. She said I was making it too complicated and to just use one shade. I tried her method on a client with stubborn gray roots last Tuesday and the coverage came out way more even. I used to think blending two colors gave me more control but it just made things muddy. Has anyone else had a senior stylist call them out on a habit that actually worked better simpler?

Vent: My diy paver patio after one Minnesota winter

I put in a 10x12 paver patio last August using polymeric sand and everything looked great... until the snow melted. Now I've got 3 spots where pavers shifted over an inch and the sand is washing out in chunks. Has anyone tried using a base of crushed concrete instead of gravel for fixing this kind of settling?

Shoutout to the recipe that taught me chicken thighs need 10 extra minutes in the air fryer

I was making my usual crispy chicken thighs last Tuesday, following a recipe from some random blog. The instructions said 20 minutes at 375, but after 20 minutes I pulled them out and they were still pink inside. I was about to toss them back in for another 5 when I noticed a note at the bottom of the page that said "all air fryers run hot, add 10 minutes for dark meat." I had been undercooking my chicken for like 4 months without realizing it. Now I always add 10 minutes and let them rest for 5 before cutting. Has anyone else found a cooking time that just never worked with your specific fryer model?

Stumbled into a bakery in St. Louis that uses a 70 year old starter

I was visiting my sister last weekend and we walked past this tiny spot called Old Town Bread. Decided to grab a loaf and ended up chatting with the baker for like 20 minutes. Turns out they still use a sourdough starter that a German immigrant brought over in the 1950s. The owner said it's been fed daily for 70+ years and gives their bread this crazy tang you just can't fake. I tried their classic boule and I swear the crumb was like nothing I've made at home. Has anyone ever worked with a starter that old? I'm curious if it really makes a difference or if it's mostly hype.

Last Tuesday was the worst shift I've had in 6 years on the boilermaker crew

We were swapping out a tube bundle at a refinery near Gary, Indiana, and the crane operator misread the lift plan by 3 feet. The bundle swung into a header box and cracked it, setting us back a full day. Has anyone else had a single miscommunication turn a good week into a nightmare?

Just realized most roofers in Toronto are skipping the ice and water shield on sheds and garages

Tbh I've been doing roof work on the side for about 3 years now and I keep seeing guys throw regular felt on flat shed roofs or small garages without any ice and water shield near the eaves. Last month I helped a buddy replace his garden shed roof that was only 5 years old and the plywood was totally rotted under the felt because water got trapped under ice dams. I asked him who installed it and he said some handyman off Kijiji. It costs maybe 60 bucks extra for a roll of ice and water shield and it would have saved him 400 in plywood and labor. Why are people so cheap about this one detail? Has anyone else noticed how many small buildings around the GTA are just asking for leaks because of this?

Can we talk about that guy I saw using a drafting brush for digital work?

I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday and this younger drafter had a whole setup going on a tablet. He was using one of those old school drafting brushes to dust off his screen between strokes. I mean it made me think about how we still hold onto some physical habits even when everything's gone digital. Maybe it's just me but I feel like that tactile thing can help with accuracy when you're doing line work. Has anyone else kept an old tool from the board days that still finds a use on your computer?

Spent $200 on a 'revolutionary' weighted blanket and it fell apart after 3 washes

Oh man, I got completely ripped off by one of those too! I ordered this "ultra premium" weighted blanket that was supposed to be 20 pounds, and after two gentle washes all the glass beads clumped up at the bottom like a giant sandbag. It was from some influencer's ad and cost me like 180 bucks, now it's just sitting in my closet because I'm too mad to even look at it. My cat loves it though, she sleeps on the lumpy part, so at least someone gets some use out of this overpriced disaster.

I finally gave up on that downtown Austin co-working space after burning $800

Read this thing the other day where some tech guy said working remotely is about "embracing the chaos" and honestly that's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while. Like no, I don't want to embrace the chaos of my laptop dying because I'm camped out by the only outlet in a coffee shop. Holding your laptop up by a window like a medieval peasant trying to catch a signal is not embracing anything, it's just survival. Maybe we should stop pretending this is all some romantic grind and just admit we're all just trying to make it to 5pm without throwing our routers out the window.

Nah bird nests don't cause fires, they just trap heat and make the dryer work harder.

My mortar mixer belt snapped halfway through a patio job in Phoenix last Tuesday

You’re not alone here. I had the same Gates belt snap on me after about 8 months in the Vegas heat. Switched to the Goodyear Eagle PD based on a buddy’s recommendation and it’s been on the mixer over a year now with zero issues. @betty_kelly9 is right that six months in Phoenix is rough, but the Goodyear seems to handle the dry heat way better. Worth the swap even if it costs a few bucks more upfront.
