I found my old sketchbook from high school and it's just sad now.

I was cleaning out my parents' garage in Phoenix last weekend and found a whole box of drawings from when I was 17. I was going to go to art school, but I took a 'practical' business degree instead. Anyone else look at their old passion and just feel a weird kind of nothing?

A chat with my uncle about his old truck made me rethink my whole career plan

I was set on going to a big university for business, thinking it was the only real path. Last summer, my uncle was fixing up his 1972 Chevy pickup and asked me to help. He said, 'You know, I learned more from rebuilding this engine than I ever did in a classroom. The good jobs aren't always the ones you have to pay for.' That stuck with me. I spent the next month looking into trade programs and found a welding apprenticeship that starts next fall. It feels like a much better fit for how I learn. Has anyone else had a simple conversation completely flip their plans like that?

My old bandmate in Seattle said something that killed our album idea

We were in his garage studio, listening to a rough mix of a song we'd worked on for weeks. He just turned the volume down and said, 'This sounds like a demo for a band that already exists.' That was it, we never finished the project. Anyone else have a dream that just got shut down by one comment?

Hot take: I used to watch shows one episode a week, now I wait for the full season to drop

Back in the day, I'd be glued to the TV every Thursday at 8 PM for a new episode of something like 'Lost'. Now, I won't even start a new show until all 8 or 10 episodes are out on Netflix. The change happened about five years ago when I got tired of forgetting plot points between weekly drops. What's a show you waited to binge that was totally worth it?

Showerthought: I spent three whole days trying to match a single pottery sherd

Back in 2008, I was on a dig in New Mexico cataloging a bunch of Anasazi pottery. Found one piece with a weird, faded black line pattern. The site lead said it was probably just a common Mesa Verde style, but it didn't look right to me. I spent the next 72 hours going through every reference book and box of labeled fragments we had on site, even calling a professor at the local college. Turns out it was a rare Kayenta trade piece from over 200 miles away, which totally changed our view of that pit's timeline. Anyone else ever get stuck on one tiny detail that ended up being a big deal?

Hot take: I finally got why my pork shoulder was always dry after a trip to a barbecue joint in Kansas City.

I was there for a competition last fall and saw a pitmaster pull a shoulder at 195 degrees, not the 205 I always aimed for. He wrapped it in butcher paper and let it rest in a cooler for four hours. Tried it back at my shop, and the texture was completely different, way more juicy. Anyone else pull their pork at a lower temp like that?

My automated bill pay for my car loan just didn't process last week

I got a notice in the mail on Friday saying my payment was late, which was a shock because I set it up on autopay through my bank months ago. I checked my bank account and the money was still sitting there, so the transfer just never went out. I had to call the loan company and pay over the phone to avoid a bigger fee. Has anyone else had an auto-pay just randomly fail like this? I'm kind of nervous about trusting it now.

Had a customer in Denver ask me why I was putting a splitter on his line

He was a retired engineer and stood there watching me work, then asked if it would cut his speed in half. I explained it was for his second TV box and showed him the signal levels on my meter. Has anyone else had a customer really grill you on the technical side of a basic install?

I spent two years trying to build a 'cool' Austin tech company before a coffee chat fixed my brain

I was so focused on getting a slick office downtown and having the right kind of branded swag that I forgot to make something people would actually pay for. The tipping point was a coffee at Houndstooth last week with a guy who runs a boring but profitable data cleaning service. He asked me point blank, 'What's your customer's biggest pain point, and how much will they pay to fix it?' I had a whole pitch about market vision, but I couldn't give him a straight answer on price. That question sat with me for days. I realized I was building for other founders to admire, not for a real user with a wallet. Now I'm going back to talk to the five small accounting firms I had on my 'maybe' list and asking that one question. Has anyone else had to kill their 'cool' idea to chase something that actually makes money?

He said it during a repair meetup in Phoenix, and I was pretty annoyed at first. I switched to a thinner gauge solder and a lower temp on my Hakko, and my boards look way cleaner now. Anyone else get a piece of feedback that stung but actually helped?
