Went to a coffee shop in Portland and saw someone bullet journaling their coffee tasting notes

I was at Heart Coffee on Morrison last Saturday and this guy had a whole spread for each pour-over he tried, tracking aroma, temp, and mouthfeel. It was so detailed I almost asked him to take over my messy weekly log. Anyone else ever run into a stranger's bullet journal out in the wild and get weirdly inspired?

That barista who told me to stop buying dark roast

I was at a little shop in Billings, Montana last Tuesday and ordered their darkest roast like I always do. The barista, a younger guy with glasses, just shook his head and said "you're missing out on 90% of what that bean can do." He made me a cup of their light roast on the house and I swear it tasted like blueberries and honey. Has anyone else had a coffee shop worker completely change how you order?

That stat on sourdough starter discard shocked me this week

I was reading King Arthur Flour's blog Tuesday and they said 50% of home bakers toss their starter discard instead of using it. That's half of us just throwing away perfectly good flour and water. Has anyone else found a go-to use for the discard that actually works?

Switched to bread flour for my pizza dough and finally got the crust I wanted

I always used all-purpose flour because that's what my grandma used. Last week I tried bread flour with a higher protein content and the crust came out crispy on the outside and chewy inside. Has anyone else noticed a big difference swapping flours for their pizza?

That random alley in Portland where I saw how rain changes everything

I was walking through a back alley near my apartment on SE Hawthorne last week during a downpour. There's this old cracked concrete path that usually looks dirty and gross. But with the rain, the colors of the wet bricks and the moss between the cracks just popped. I stood there for maybe 5 minutes just watching water run down a rusty pipe and collect in a puddle. Made me realize I've been walking past beauty every day but not seeing it because I'm always in a hurry or looking at my phone. Has anyone else had a moment where a familiar boring place became totally different in bad weather?

Compared stacked vs single exposure moon shots this weekend

I shot the moon with a single frame on my Canon and then tried stacking about 50 frames in Registax. The stacked image had way more crater detail and less noise even though it took longer to process. Has anyone else noticed a big jump in quality when they switched to stacking?

That one Tuesday where I had three redlines come back with zero changes

Happened about two weeks ago. I work at a small structural steel shop in Ohio and I had a weirdly perfect day where three separate sets of drawings I submitted came back approved without a single mark. First time that's ever happened to me (I've been drafting about 6 years now). Usually I get at least a few minor adjustments or dimension callouts changed. The architect on one of them actually called and said 'looks good, send it to fabrication' which caught me so off guard I asked him to repeat it. Has anyone else ever had a streak like that or is this just beginner's luck finally paying off?

She said she only put in $5,000 total per kid and is just letting it grow, while I've been dumping $200 a month into each account since birth, has anyone else scaled back after realizing you might be overfunding?

Found a trick for pulling wire through tight conduit in an old building

I was working in a 1920s building downtown last month, trying to pull 3 new circuits through a 3/4 inch conduit that had two 90s and a 45. I tried lube and a fishtape but kept getting stuck at the second bend. Finally I taped a strong magnet to the end of my fishtape and used another magnet on the outside of the conduit to guide it past the tight spots. It worked on the first try after that. Has anyone else used magnets for tricky pulls like this?

Medical study made me give up my anti-vitamin stance

I was dead set against taking vitamin D supplements for years. Read some blog posts that said they were a scam and just expensive pee. Then my doctor showed me a 2019 study from the University of Colorado linking low vitamin D to bone density loss in people my age. My levels came back at 18 ng/mL, which is basically deficient. Been taking 2000 IU daily for 3 months now and my follow up bloodwork jumped to 45. Still feels weird admitting I was wrong. Anyone else have a hard time changing your mind on health stuff after digging your heels in?
