Showerthought: The hassle of VHS rewinding actually deepened my childhood movie nights

Ngl, I think struggling with the tape and tracking made those films feel more earned than just streaming anything instantly.

Oh man, the best was when you finally got it to stop rolling and it was just those color bars with the awful tone. Felt like you had to solve a puzzle just to see a movie, all that fiddling with the knob while the picture was just squiggly lines. Honestly, we must have thought getting a headache from the static was part of the fun. What a weird way to feel like you were "working" for your entertainment.

Absolutely, @amycarr, you had to know the little trick! The tiny vertical hold knob on the back was the real fix for those rolling bars. It did feel weirdly rewarding when you finally got it to snap into place.

Funny how the physical commitment of putting a tape in meant you were stuck with that choice. No scrolling through a menu for an hour, just whatever you already pulled off the shelf. That lack of options was its own kind of peace.

Remember fighting with the tracking for ten minutes? That whole thing made you feel like you were EARNING that movie.
