My trusty geologic time chart from college doesn't match the new ones.

I dug out my old fold-out geologic time scale from years ago. Comparing it to current versions, the dates for some periods have moved around a lot. Is there a reason why the timelines keep getting tweaked, or is it just better science?

Yeah, it's actually both. New dating methods keep getting more precise, so the numbers get adjusted. Plus there's sometimes international committees that officially change the boundaries between periods.

Totally what victor_lee said about committees. It's not just better tech, it's also people voting on where one period ends and another starts. They argue over which rock layer in some cliff in the world is the perfect example. Like the end of the dinosaurs, that K-Pg line, they moved it a bit because they found a better spot to pin the date. So your chart keeps drifting because the rock dates get more precise and the official lines get redrawn. It's a slow chase for the right numbers.

Honestly, I look at it a bit different. Sure, committees vote, but that's just part of science getting better. It's not just arguing over rocks; it's about making sure the dates match what we really find. When they moved the K-Pg line, it was because new evidence showed a clearer picture. So the chart drifts because we're learning more, not just because people can't agree. That slow chase is how we get closer to the truth, and that's a good thing.

I mean it's just rocks and dates, right? Feels like people get way too worked up about this stuff. Idk maybe it's just me but it doesn't seem like a huge deal.
