Unpopular opinion: I stopped using a strict budget after a trip to Vegas
I was at a conference there last fall, and I saw a guy lose a huge bet at a craps table. He had this whole envelope system with cash for each day, but he blew it all in one go. It hit me that focusing on every single dollar can make you panic and make bad choices. Now I just track my main bills and let the rest flow, which feels way less stressful. Anyone else ditch detailed budgeting for something simpler?

Yeah, that bit about your cousin checking every receipt really hits home. I got so tired of that same feeling, like the budget was running my life instead of the other way around. Letting go of the tiny details was a huge relief.

Remember my cousin tried that envelope thing for groceries last year. She got so stressed about going over her cash limit that she'd buy the cheapest stuff even if it meant eating junk all week. I mean, watching her check every receipt felt like more work than just having a general idea of what you spend. Sometimes the system makes you fixate on the wrong stuff.

My friend Mark tried tracking every single coffee he bought for a month. He had this whole spreadsheet, but by week three he was just avoiding cafes entirely and seemed miserable. It kinda defeated the point of having a little treat budget.
