Rant: A professor in college said my designs were 'too safe'

He told me to 'break a seam' on purpose in my next project, which felt crazy. Now I always try to add one unexpected detail, like a mismatched button or an inside-out panel. Anyone else get a piece of advice that stuck with them like that?

That's actually pretty solid advice. Sounds like your prof wanted you to stop overthinking and just try something. Now you've got a cool signature move.

Totally get what you're saying, blair_taylor32. I had a teacher tell me something similar once, that I was stuck in my own head about a project. She basically said to just pick a direction and go for it, even if it felt wrong. It's crazy how often the best stuff comes from just doing the thing instead of planning it to death. That's how I ended up with my own weird little style, kind of like your signature move.

Read a book that called this the "ready, fire, aim" method.
