My neighborhood's facial recognition trash can system had a major glitch last Tuesday

Our town in Ohio rolled out these 'smart' trash cans that use cameras to fine people for putting the wrong stuff in recycling. It charged my neighbor $50 for a pizza box that was totally clean. I spent three days gathering proof and filing an appeal with the city. It made me really think about how these systems can get it wrong and who gets hurt. Has anyone else had to fight a mistake made by an automated city service?

That's the hidden cost of "smart" city tech right there.

Yeah, that hidden cost thing is everywhere now. It's like every new gadget or app comes with a sneaky price tag.

But that transparency is the whole point of smart tech.
