I picked the wrong side on the grocery store facial recognition thing

For a year, I thought the new checkout cameras at my local Market Basket were just for loss prevention. Then a guy from their tech team gave a talk at the library last month and said they're testing software to guess your mood and suggest products. I had to choose between supporting the store's 'efficiency' or writing to the town council about it. I wrote the letter, and they actually voted to look into a local ban on that specific tech. It went better than I thought. Has your town dealt with anything like this?

Our library talk had a cop who said those plate readers solve more hit and runs than thefts. Sometimes the tech finds the right balance if the rules are clear from the start. I guess I just see more good than bad in that one case.

Our town council tried to ban license plate readers last year. It got messy because the police said they needed them for stolen cars, so they made a weird rule about only using the data for that.

My buddy Nate got a weirdly specific coupon texted to him for allergy meds right after he sneezed a bunch in the drugstore aisle. Turns out they had those mood cameras too, but for "shopping habits." He felt watched for weeks, like the store was following his every move. He complained to the manager, but they just said it was to "help" him. Did your council find out what they do with the mood data they collect?
