Took me 30 years to realize my dad was right about eating dinner at the table

Last Thanksgiving at my brother's place, everyone had their phones out during the meal and nobody talked for 20 minutes. My old man just looked at me and I finally got why he used to yell at us for leaving the table.

Man it's crazy how we're all glued to these little screens even when people are right in front of us.

You mean why do we still scroll past someone's actual face to read their status update? Is it because real conversations are harder to bail out of when they get awkward? Sometimes I wonder if we're just scared of the silence that happens when you run out of things to say in person.

Honestly man, @murphy.mason's point about being glued to screens even with people right there hits different now. Used to think I was just being efficient, multitasking or whatever, but you're both making me realize it's really about avoiding that awkward silence. It's way easier to pretend I'm reading something important on my phone than to sit there not knowing what to say to someone I just met at a party. Makes me wonder how many real conversations I've missed out on because I was scared of a few seconds of quiet.
