My old lawnmower quit on me last Saturday and I had a weird thought

I was halfway through my yard when the engine just died and wouldn't start again, no matter how much I pulled the cord. I sat on the grass, annoyed, looking at the half-cut lawn for about twenty minutes. Then it hit me... I've been mowing the same pattern for fifteen years just because that's how my dad showed me. Has anyone else had a simple tool breaking make them question a bigger habit?

That's actually a really cool moment to have, even if it's frustrating when your mower dies. Laura_schmidt82 has a point about patterns working, but sometimes you don't realize you're on autopilot until something forces you to stop. I had the same thing happen with my morning coffee routine for years, always making it the exact same way. One day my favorite mug broke, and I just stood there realizing I didn't even like that brand of coffee anymore. It makes you wonder what other small habits we keep just because we started them, not because they're still the best way. What pattern did you try after you got the mower fixed?

Patterns exist for a reason though. Your dad's method probably got the job done efficiently for years. Questioning a working system just because a machine broke seems like looking for meaning where there isn't any. Sometimes a lawnmower is just a lawnmower, and the way you cut grass is just the fastest way to finish a chore. Overthinking a simple task can waste more time than just fixing the mower and getting back to work.

But come on, it's just cutting grass. Laura's acting like we're talking about brain surgery. The pattern works until it doesn't, like Angela's coffee thing. My dad's method left weird stripes because he never overlapped rows. Fixed the mower, tried going in circles instead. Took two extra minutes and looked way better. Not everything needs a deep meaning, but if you're already stopped, why not try a tweak?
