Heard a podcast guest say 'competition is for losers' and it flipped my whole business approach

I was driving home from work last week listening to some entrepreneur interview on the radio, and this guy said trying to beat other people just traps you in a race to the bottom. He talked about how focusing on your own unique strengths makes competition irrelevant, and I realized I'd been obsessing over what my rivals were doing for 2 years. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple quote just completely rerouted their thinking?

Are you talking about that Peter Thiel quote from Zero to One? I heard it the same way, just a random podcast in traffic, and it messed with my head for days. For me, I stopped checking my competitors' prices and started focusing on the one thing I do better than anyone in my area, and it took about six months before I noticed my regulars started coming back without me having to undercut anyone. It's wild how much mental space that frees up when you stop watching the other guys.

Had a buddy who ran a little landscaping business, same thing. He was obsessing over what the big guys charged and kept dropping his rates til he barely made a profit. One day his mower broke down and he had to borrow his dad's old push mower. While he was waiting for parts he just started trimming edges and pulling weeds by hand on his jobs. His customers started calling him specifically asking for that extra detail work. Took him like a year to realize the big companies couldn't beat him on the small stuff because they just didn't care about it. He tripled his prices for the detailed work and people actually paid it. Still bugs me when people act like a single quote cant shift your whole mindset.

Man I gotta say I'm not sure it's that deep. It's just a business book quote, you know? People act like a sentence from some billionaire is gonna change their whole life. Did it really mess with your head for days or are you just saying that?
