My old boss told me to never hire a friend, and I did it anyway
About five years ago, when I was first opening my shop, my old foreman sat me down. He said, 'Lily, you can be friendly with your crew, but don't put a friend on your payroll. It never ends well.' I thought he was just being cynical. So I hired my buddy Mark to help with the wiring jobs. For the first year, it was fine, but then he started showing up late, calling out for dumb reasons, and I couldn't bring myself to fire him. It cost me two good clients who got tired of the delays. I finally had to let him go last fall, and we haven't spoken since. Has anyone else ignored advice like that and paid for it?
