A plumber in Tacoma showed me his trick for cutting around a tight pipe

He uses a piece of cardboard to make a perfect template before he even touches the drywall. He traced the pipe, cut the shape out of the cardboard, and then traced that onto the board. The fit was so clean he barely needed any mud. What's your go-to method for tricky cutouts like that?

Used to think eyeballing it was fine until I messed up a cut for a ceiling light. Now I make a paper template every single time, it saves so much hassle and waste. That plumber knows what's up.

Barely needed any mud" is the real fantasy here, my guy. That's the part they always leave out of the DIY videos.

Ever try the paper tape instead of mesh? Worked way better for me on a bad corner, victorh81. Still used a stupid amount of mud though.
